One of my favorite essayists, The Atlantic's Caitlin Flanagan, has a long takeout on Oprah Winfrey in the December issue. Weirdly, it doesn't touch at all on the struggles of Winfrey's year-old cable network, OWN, but what it has to say about the nature of Winfrey's unique appeal to women and connection to celebrities is worth your time.
Fame brings as many perks as it does problems. Part and parcel with money and recognition come high profile lawsuits. Celebrities sue and are sued in return for anything and everything, including not liking beef (The Cattle Industry vs. Oprah) and daring to make a fan site for a favorite performer (Prince vs. His Fans). The law is constantly being perverted so some can make a point.
